Answer to Quiz No. 5/2015 dated 29 March 2015
Quadriceps/ Suprapatellar fat pad impingement syndrome
Findings
The quadriceps / suprapatellar fat pad shows marked enlargement with edema and inflammatory change with significant hyperintense signal on PD fat sat images.
Discussion
Suprapatellar or quadriceps fat pad is a triangular fat pad located on the patellar base and between the posterior aspect of the quadriceps tendon insertion and the suprapatellar recess posteriorly. Results from repetitive microtrauma or overuse injury causing intrafatpad hemorrhage and inflammation. Predominant in young males. Commonly present with anterior knee pain. The classical MRI findings are a thickened and edematous suprapatellar fat pad with a dorsal convex margin.
